This was one of our favourite spots in the gorgeous San Francisco! The understated beauty, size and the simplicity of this landmark left you with a sense of relaxed calm. It was as if we were transported to another time, a place where you could escape from the hum-drum of the city!

History

The Palace of Fine Arts has a very interesting history that relates to the time when the city of San Francisco was recovering from the 1906 earthquake. It has in the meantime been rebuilt and renovated, the last of which was completed in 2009.

The Palace of Fine Arts state:

“The inspiration for the Palace, with its soaring colonnade, grand rotunda, and carefully constructed pond, was meant to evoke quiet sadness and solemnity. This is most evident as one observes the “weeping ladies” facing into the tops of the columns throughout the park.”
